Vivienne Lia left Arsenal last week to join Eintracht Frankfurt on a permanent deal. The 19-year-old has signed a contract with the German club until June 2030, with the transfer fee undisclosed.

There is an easy reaction whenever a young player leaves an academy that has invested years in their development: has the club allowed someone to leave whom they should have kept?

It's of course a fair question, but as ever I’m not sure it's quite the right one in this case.

### Vivienne Lia’s journey through the Arsenal academy

Vivienne joined Arsenal’s academy at 14 and progressed through the system into the first-team environment. She made senior appearances, signed her first professional contract and gained further experience during loan spells with Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Swedish side Hammarby.

Arsenal spent several years helping her develop from a highly talented academy player into someone ready for senior football.

Eintracht Frankfurt have now offered Lia a contract running until 2030\. As we discussed with our signing of Lisa Baum, that length of commitment suggests Frankfurt are not merely taking a casual look at her. They clearly believe there is a player they want to develop over several seasons.

### Why regular first-team football matters

There will always be a part of us that wants every Arsenal academy graduate to run out at Emirates Stadium, become a regular and stay for ten years. It's a wonderful footballing story - and we all love those.

However, we also have to consider the team Vivienne would be attempting to break into.

Renée Slegers has spoken about wanting two players in every position, sometimes more when you account for those capable of playing several roles. This pre-season has shown just how well-equipped Arsenal have become in certain areas.

That's excellent news for a club trying to win the Women’s Super League. It's less helpful for a 19-year-old whose development now depends upon playing senior football every week.

At some point, development must extend beyond training alongside elite players. Young footballers need meaningful minutes.

They need to make a mistake in the first half and be challenged to correct it after the break. They need to discover what happens when an opposition team spends all week preparing specifically to stop them. They need to play when their legs are tiring after 80 minutes - not simply receive another 15-minute appearance at the end of a match that's already been decided.

Those experiences are difficult to reproduce when a player is waiting behind established internationals for limited opportunities.

### A new chapter at Eintracht Frankfurt

Vivienne Lia leaving Arsenal does not necessarily mean Arsenal failed her, that Lia failed, or that someone made the wrong decision.

Sometimes the development pathway works, but its final destination is not the club where the journey began.

If Arsenal helped an exciting 14-year-old progress into senior football - and she is now good enough for Eintracht Frankfurt to offer her a long-term future in Germany - that doesn't strike me as failure.

Of course, I would have loved to see how far Vivienne could have gone at Arsenal. There's also a personal connection: she attended school here in north London, very close to where I live and, in fact, the same school as my goddaughter.

Now, though, we get to follow the next stage of Vivienne Lia’s career at Eintracht Frankfurt, where she will hopefully receive the regular first-team football she needs to fulfil her potential.
